About our Filipino Orphanage
The area served by this project is the area of Puerto Princesa City located on the east coast of Palawan province island in southwest Philippines. The population of this community is 160,000 comprised of 71,640 children aging 17 years and below (almost half of the population). The economy in the region is mostly agricultural as the Philippines is still an agricultural country and categorized as “third world”. Almost 75% of the population is poor and landless peasants and fisher folds and indigenous peoples. The growing number of urban poor communities in the outskirts of the city and the pier area are displaced farmers in the countryside who opted to look for opportunities in the city. Sad to say, most of them end up as jobless migrants and worst, some of are forced to engage in anti-social activities. Their children are left uncared and sometimes orphaned.
God wants every child to be part of a loving and nurturing family. A shelter and orphanage would take that important role in the lives of children and youth who now have no home. To be part of a family is a basic right of all children. It will be the goal of this project to address these needs with a program coordinator/director and 3 staff members, namely a full-time teacher and spiritual formator, a psychiatrist-health workers, and a community development worker. The staff will serve the project full-time in accordance of the regulations and policies agreed on by a management committee composed of the Director, Board of Church and Society and the Peace and Justice Desk coordinator and staff.
Within the past year, the Reverend D.S. Norberto Saranilla of the Palawan, Philippines Annual Conference, with project approval from Bishop Leo A. Soriano, has secured a building that will be used as an orphanage. It is with your help that this was made possible.
It is our hope and prayer that gifts continue to come to support this program. Your financial help will be used to complete the orphanage and feed, nurture, educate, and uplift the condition of these children and young people.
